In 2014, amid heightened ethnic tensions in northern Kenya, the Al-kawthar (the blessed) Development
Organization (ALDO), in collaboration with the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya, organized a peace and
conflict resolution forum in Samburu County. The initiative brought together elders, youth leaders, women,
religious figures, and local administrators from the Turkana and Samburu communities to promote dialogue,
reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence. This engagement helped de-escalate local hostilities and laid the
foundation for community-led peace building structures in the region.
Building on these early peace and cohesion efforts, ALDO expanded its community outreach to include gender-
based violence (GBV) prevention, women’s empowerment, and youth inclusion. By 2016, in partnership
with FIDA-Kenya, ALDO was facilitating community workshops in Kajiado County focused on GBV awareness,
legal rights, and access to justice—empowering local leaders and community champions to advocate for equality
and protection.
In 2017, ALDO’s focus evolved to integrate livelihoods, literacy, and poverty reduction through baseline
surveys and participatory engagement in Mutaro Village, Maralal Town, Samburu County. The findings
informed new interventions aimed at improving literacy, economic empowerment, and social resilience
among pastoralist and marginalized communities across Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
Together, these milestones highlight ALDO’s sustained commitment to peace building, social justice, and
inclusive community development, forming a strong foundation for its ongoing work in climate resilience,
governance, and human rights promotion.
